Cori's 2nd foal Wikke (father Heinse 354) went off to training last month and yesterday we visited him. Wikke (owned by Sara Andrew) is still a very young fellow having just turned 3years old two months before this video. Training is going slowly but well as he adjusts and gets balance. He is a lovely, willing boy. Wikke is at Dragstra Stables in NC for training. Once a horse [more...]

The vet came today to do a 30 day check on Cori's pregnancy (again, she is bred to Beart 411 via frozen semen). The fetus was a little blob with two arm-like vestiges on each side of the blob. The "arms" appeared segmented. In fact, this was the backbone and the segments were vertebrae. In the middle of the blob we could see a teeny heart beating. I have to say, this made me grin [more...]

Cori and baby Freya. May, 2009 I have taken my mares Dahlia and Cori to Va Tech twice now for inseminations. Once in late May. At that time neither became pregnant. I took them again in early June and got test results yesterday. Dahlia (being crossed with Onne 376) still did not catch. But Cori (crossed with Beart 411) is now pregnant at 16 days! I'll keep checking her since it is [more...]

Quick update: Cori and Dahlia came home from Va Tech Equine hospital on Tuesday. They were there 8 days as they went through their cycle and were inseminated with frozen semen by the experts there. Cori ovulated much earlier than anyone forecasted. The vets did a post ovulation insemination but I feel certain it was too late and the opportunity passed by on this go 'round. I was trying to breed her to Beart 411. [more...]

[gallery link="file"]Ficus (Mintse x Wierd x Tsjerk) recently turned 1 year old. He is a pretty thing and full of rambunctiousness and energy. With his breeding he will likely be quite a powerful mover, especially in the trot. Presently he is a typical yearling - a little off balance and gawky. A pretty thing though. I cannot believe how he is the spitting image of his mom. Here is a video from [more...]

In 20009 we bred only one mare due to the slow economy. This was Hiltje's foal and it was born a few weeks ago. Unfortunately the foal was premature and it passed away before ever being able to nurse. That was very sad for us. This year we are looking to breed three mares, but two will be via frozen semen which is very difficult to accomplish. Those two mares (Cori [more...]

It has been a crazy, busy winter. The snow and cold have been relentless and unusually extreme for my area. This has made even the small things a bit of a burden, so I feel very behind. But ya know, the days go by, and spring is here, and it is time to decide about breeding. What mares do I breed, and to what stallions? I think this year I will try [more...]

She misses her mom and followed me around like a puppy. I think she is just going to be a wonderful mare. She is 6 months old now and entering the gawky "ugly Friesian" stage. I can hardly wait to see what butterfly will come out of the cocoon when she hits 3 years old. I have very high hopes for her.

A while ago - mid 1990's or so - I traveled to Europe and lot on business. I would come over for a week or two, then go back home, then a few months later come back for another few weeks. I did this for about 5 years. During that time, I worked mostly in London, Prague and Madrid. But I visited lots of places - Paris, Brussels, Zurich, Bern, Nice, Amsterdam, the Hague. I [more...]

Yesterday my friend Sara and I went to Lexington VA to a dressage show. We went explicitly to see the KFPS approved stallion Meinse 439. Meinse, imported to America last year, is a 5 year old son of Heinse 354. People who know me know how much I loved Heinse, who died this past spring. Heinse is the father of my new filly Freya and was father of the colt Wikke, who was bred by [more...]

These are of our horses. Tara made Ster with a 2nd premie. Ficus was 2nd premie and scored 7.5 on his trot. Freya achieved 2nd premie and was named Champion Filly. We had a nice day....

We attended the keuring in Huntersville, NC yesterday and we had quite a good day! First, thanks to the keuring hosts and organizers at Shady Nook Farm, as well as to Rick Simonetti who came down to help out. Everyone was just great. Our horses had a wonderful day! Tara (Wander x Thomas), the 3 year old, became a ster [more...]

Today my horse buddy Sara and I got up at 5am, loaded Dahlia and Tara, and headed down the mountain. Tara is going to the trainer, Wiebe Dragstra, to get fit for the keuring and learn some basic harness skills in the meantime. Anyone who follows my blog knows I think the world of Wiebe and his wife Amy - no one knows how to train Friesians better than these two. Wiebe simply works miracles [more...]

On Friday morning May 15 2009 at 4:45 am I got a call from my friend Jill in Oregon. Jill had been helping with foal watch during the late hours and that night she volunteered to stay up until 5am EDT (2am her time). "Cori is having her baby and you need to get to the barn." I woke up Dawn and we headed to the car. Jill called again "Get down there NOW. The [more...]

Today is day 339 of Cori's pregnancy, which means she is due tomorrow. I have expected this baby for a week now and all of us who are staying up all night watching her on the webcam are getting pretty darned tired. Today Blaine, the farrier, came to trim the horse's feet. Dahlia went first, no issues. Cori was next and the poor thing had an awful time picking up a foot [more...]

Cori's foal by Heinse 354 is due May 13, one week from today. But that mare is just about ready to foal. Last night I was watching the monitor and ran down to the barn at 2am, sure the baby was on its way. But, false alarm. Cori is staring to shuffle her back feet and move around as the baby positions itself. Must feel really awkward. So when will it happen? Not sure, but [more...]

The new orphaned foal, Ficus, has found his nurse mare adoptive mom and the two of them headed for home at the big farm on April 21. Here is a quick video as they leave the hospital and get on the trailer, heading for Tanbark Acres.

In the last post I told of losing our mare Oeke last week due to complications from foalbirth. Her baby, a colt by Mintse 384, is still in the hospital at the Virginia Tech Equine facility. We have found a nurse mare for him and brought her in from Kentucky. It looks like he will be able to bond with her and the vet techs are working with them now to [more...]

OK, I have managed to create a place for viewing the videos all in one place. Look in the nabigation above and click "Stallion Videos". Also, the link is http://accidentalessayist.net/friesian-stallion-videos/ (if you wish to bookmark it). I will be adding from my camcorder until I have all of them up there. I just added Jorn, Ulke, Onne and Mewes. Enjoy!

This one may be dark again - but I can lighten it up when I get back and am on a real computer. Here is Jasper 366 showing off. He no longer has to compete - they just bring him out so people can see him.

Today we slept in, then Gryt made coffee and Walter got some eggs from his chickens and we had a leisurely breakfast. Afterwards mom, Carole and Gryt headed over to the Friesian Museum to see an exhibition of antique quilts. Dad, Walter and I went all around Friesian so I could take pictures and visit horses. We saw Walter's broodmares and his weanlings and yearlings - all fillies. I think this is almost the prettiest [more...]

The competition for the 2009 world championship began early. Though everything started at 9, the arena was well on its way to being full at 8. They started off with the older stallions. I took a few shots from the "backstage" area and it was definitely like being back stage at a rock concert. For the actual competition, the classes are broken up by when the stallion were approved. The stallions are [more...]

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="250" caption="Adel retires"][/caption] We just got back from the Friday evening event. It was AWESOME. There were dressage exhibitions, marathon driving, the history of the Friesian horse, pas de deux, even a little foal with a puppet strapped astride it (yes, that is correct!). I have loads of video but I will have to process it when I get back to a big computer. Of all [more...]

A lot of you folks have been interested in the stallion Harmen and I admit, I love that guy too. Yesterday he competed in the final harness test. Though the cumulative results for harness competition put him in 3rd place overall, last night he was magnificent. Here I have a video. It is dark and I am sorry - when I get home on a real computer I will try to lighten [more...]

Today started with a couple of clinics. Unfortunately, we missed out on some of them - mom and dad were so tired that they had a hard time getting out of bed. Regardless, there was a good session on breeding. I just missed out on an excellent session on judging, but this summer there3 is to be a 5 day clinic here in Friesland. I am going to try very hard to save enough money [more...]
