UPDATE: We checked Tara at 15 days post insemination and she is in foal to Fridse 423! This should be a really nice foal. We will recheck at approx. 60 days in late August. Assuming all goes well this foal would be due early June 2012. It is extremely rare for us to put one of our star mares up for sale. We need a little extra space now, so we do [more...]

Well, I really had a great time yet again. Some changes from previous years included an excellent wifi connection (yay!), a LIVE band with singers on Saturday night (now that was a treat), more clinics and just generally improved facilities. There were a few nice presentations during the show. Jasper and Teunis were recognized for being named preferent stallions. Teunis, of course, died a few years ago at the young age of [more...]

Interesting demo class. Driving horses put under saddle and ridden at walk and trot. Tack is dressage saddle but driving bridle. Crowd encouraged to cheer for their favorite. Translator says this is Dutch version of saddle seat. These horses want to GO. Will post short video soon. Heinse son won:)

First group completes round 2. All 8 go to the testing!! One Fabe, one Jasper, 3 Onne, 1 Rindert, 1 Sape, 1 Teeuwis. Best young stallion of show? My friend Walter liked him best from yesterday. He did make it past round 2 and goes to the 70 days test... Group 2 - of the 8, three made it to the test. 1 Aan, 1 [more...]

This stallion is owned by the VanderPloegs in Michigan. This is Yorick (Felle x Jakob). He was tested for performance at one time (possibly as an offspring of Felle when Felle was being evaluated for offspring approval?) and Yorick's scores were really high - 92 in under saddle and 85.5 in harness. In didn't think he showed particularly well last night, but it was good enough to get him to round 2.

Thrilled to report that the expo at the stallion show now has free wifi!! So I will do my best to provide some reports as I can. Yesterday (Thursday Jan 6) was the first round of young stallions. I am not exactly sure how many competed but 34 made it to the second round, which will be held tonight. Included in those 34 are two owned by FHANA members - Yorick (Felle [more...]

In the past few years at Tanbark Acres we have produced some very nice fillies here no the farm and we'd like to keep them for a while. But with space limitations this means we are now open to selling a couple of our Friesian breeding mares - something we have never done before! These two mares were the ones discussed at length in the recent series of Educational Articles regarding the Friesian Horse Inspection [more...]

KEURING SPECIAL [September 2010] FHAME (Friesian Horse Association of the Mid-East) is my local FHANA chapter and has asked me to do an educational series on the Friesian Horse inspection ("keuring"). I am trying to do one article each day this week. Below are links to the articles. Again, I hope to add one each day, for about 7 total articles. Check back daily for [more...]

This is article discusses the final results of the keuring, and what to do with those results. The article is rather short. Why? There is no precise answer. Some people feel the results help the owner determine a market value for the horse. Some people have a stallion they are hoping to advance to consideration as a breeding stallion. Others simply want to see if their horse can be rated as a ster or better. [more...]

My take: I will just go ahead and say it. I think the trot is the most misunderstood thing about judging a Friesian horse at an American inspection. Nothing is criticized more in a judge or upsets an owner more than the perceived score for a horse, based solely on what people "think" is a good trot. When people think of the Friesian horse they often think of the high head carriage [more...]

When inspecting a horse for the KFPS inspection, two of the three gaits are inspected: the walk and the trot. Stallions who are attempting to become approved as breeding stallions may have the canter inspected as well, but foals and mares are looked at (presently) for the walk and trot only. These are judged while the horse is in hand being led/exercised by a runner while a second runner ("the whip") encourages the horse to [more...]

Conformation is really not the "beauty" of the horse (of course!) Conformation has to do with the question "is this horse put together in a way that will enable it to be effectively used for its intended purpose". The conformation of a draft horse that pulls a plow might be perfect for plow pulling, but horrible for reining in loose cattle. And a reining horse might be built perfectly for that task, but completely wrong [more...]

This autumn, inspectors, judges and runners from the Netherlands will fly to North America to inspect our horses in this annual event. For those of us in the Friesian world, this is a significant time for our horses (especially the adult horses) and for Friesian lovers everywhere it is a great time to come out and see lots of Friesians in one place. So, what is an inspection (Dutch word - "keuring"), [more...]

Cori's 2nd foal Wikke (father Heinse 354) went off to training last month and yesterday we visited him. Wikke (owned by Sara Andrew) is still a very young fellow having just turned 3years old two months before this video. Training is going slowly but well as he adjusts and gets balance. He is a lovely, willing boy. Wikke is at Dragstra Stables in NC for training. Once a horse [more...]

The vet came today to do a 30 day check on Cori's pregnancy (again, she is bred to Beart 411 via frozen semen). The fetus was a little blob with two arm-like vestiges on each side of the blob. The "arms" appeared segmented. In fact, this was the backbone and the segments were vertebrae. In the middle of the blob we could see a teeny heart beating. I have to say, this made me grin [more...]

Cori and baby Freya. May, 2009 I have taken my mares Dahlia and Cori to Va Tech twice now for inseminations. Once in late May. At that time neither became pregnant. I took them again in early June and got test results yesterday. Dahlia (being crossed with Onne 376) still did not catch. But Cori (crossed with Beart 411) is now pregnant at 16 days! I'll keep checking her since it is [more...]

Quick update: Cori and Dahlia came home from Va Tech Equine hospital on Tuesday. They were there 8 days as they went through their cycle and were inseminated with frozen semen by the experts there. Cori ovulated much earlier than anyone forecasted. The vets did a post ovulation insemination but I feel certain it was too late and the opportunity passed by on this go 'round. I was trying to breed her to Beart 411. [more...]

[gallery link="file"]Ficus (Mintse x Wierd x Tsjerk) recently turned 1 year old. He is a pretty thing and full of rambunctiousness and energy. With his breeding he will likely be quite a powerful mover, especially in the trot. Presently he is a typical yearling - a little off balance and gawky. A pretty thing though. I cannot believe how he is the spitting image of his mom. Here is a video from [more...]

In 20009 we bred only one mare due to the slow economy. This was Hiltje's foal and it was born a few weeks ago. Unfortunately the foal was premature and it passed away before ever being able to nurse. That was very sad for us. This year we are looking to breed three mares, but two will be via frozen semen which is very difficult to accomplish. Those two mares (Cori [more...]

It has been a crazy, busy winter. The snow and cold have been relentless and unusually extreme for my area. This has made even the small things a bit of a burden, so I feel very behind. But ya know, the days go by, and spring is here, and it is time to decide about breeding. What mares do I breed, and to what stallions? I think this year I will try [more...]

She misses her mom and followed me around like a puppy. I think she is just going to be a wonderful mare. She is 6 months old now and entering the gawky "ugly Friesian" stage. I can hardly wait to see what butterfly will come out of the cocoon when she hits 3 years old. I have very high hopes for her.

A while ago - mid 1990's or so - I traveled to Europe and lot on business. I would come over for a week or two, then go back home, then a few months later come back for another few weeks. I did this for about 5 years. During that time, I worked mostly in London, Prague and Madrid. But I visited lots of places - Paris, Brussels, Zurich, Bern, Nice, Amsterdam, the Hague. I [more...]
