Samson, born June 8, 2005
Coriander (star) x Remmelt 323

Samson was born at 11am on June 8, 2005. He is beautiful with a lovely head and neck. His temperament is friendly and playful and we think he will grow up to be sweet, good to handle and easy to train. The type of horse someone would own for a lifetime. Just what we bred for! At six months he remains so good natured - calm and trusting. We are very pleased with how he has turned out. He will make a lovely and sweet family Friesian.

Samson achieved a 2nd premie at his keuring in September. The inspectors commented quite favorably on his conformation and movement, but wanted to see just a bit more movement. We were very pleased with their remarks.

Samson is sold. Congratulations to the Curtis family from Morganton, NC!

What we were breeding for in the Cori x Remmelt cross:

  • Versatility. Remmelt has competed sucessfully against top national warmbloods at the ZZ level in dressage in the Netherlands. This is equivalent to a US Fourth Level. Remmelt won the 1995 Jon Timmer driving award. This was the first time it was won by a young stallion outside the province of Friesland. He placed first in 13 of 15 competitions. Likewise, Cori displays a knack under saddle and in harness. She is broke to ride and drive and pulls both carts and carriages. We think her main talent lies in riding, though she has not been trained at length. Under professional training we believe her forte would be in dressage.

  • Temperament. Cori is willing to please and eager to learn. She works hard and has an affinity for humans. We wanted to make sure we kept these wonderful traits in her offspring. Remmelt is one of the few stallions who scored a perfect "10" in stall manners and trainability, and a 9 in character ("temperament").

  • Low inbreeding coeffcient. The inbreeding for this pair is a nice, low 3.12%

  • "Bigger" Trot and improved hindquarters. Cori scored quite well in the walk and shows a nice light and floating movement in the trot. To complement her unique light movement, we wanted a stallion who was light and powerful, with a bigger "front". Remmelt scored a high 8.0 in the trot during his stallion test, and his offspring show nice fronts with the back legs coming well under the body. Still, he retains the lightness on his feet, which is one reason why he has done so well in dressage.

  • Proven quality. Remmelt is fully approved on offspring and has an approved son. Remmelt's father Oege and damsire Hearke were both preferent stallions. Coriander has been rated a 1st premie star and is from a long line of good breeders, with many preferent mares in her damline. She is also from stam 25, one of the best mare lines for Friesians.

What were we expecting with this foal?

Of course, one never knows exactly how a foal will turn out. There are some things we feel pretty sure about, since these are characteristics of both Remmelt and Cori. The foal should have a good, calm temperament and it will probably have a lot of hair. Height should be slightly above average and the build more along the "modern" lines. From a performance standpoint the foal should be well suited to dressage and/or pleasure driving. We expect the foal to have a good work ethic and be eager to please and good to handle and train. These traits are especially desirable in a performance gelding. If the offspring is a filly, as an adult broodmare she will have good genetics to be a successful breeder with a nice personality.
